The ElC is a club that supports horses. Our goals are to stop horse slaughter, ensure that every horse is has a good, safe home, and to stop the export of American horses to other countries to be slaughtered. The slaughter of these horses is VERY brutal. The horse suffers greatly when slaughtered. And that's not even the point. The point is that we are killing an innocent creatures whose lives are precious. Cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens, and other animals used for meat are different because there main purpose is food. Horses are not livestock! They are companion, transportation, an work animals. Some of our best friends are horses. Call us crazy but, we would never EAT our best friend. Horses are beautiful, kind, helpful animals. One is slaughtered every 30 seconds. This means we have no time to loose. We have to put a stop to this. Not next month, not next year, NOW!!! The biggest consumers of horsemeat are France, Italy, Belgium, and Japan. Horsemeat, considered a delicacy, is used as an alternative to beef. This hurts the US beef industry. Japan regulates the amount of American beef imported into the country, but these regulations are not imposed on American horse meat. Eating horsemeat has never been an accepted part of America's culture. We can't just throw our horses away like garbage and let some rich French person eat them. And the horses that are slaughtered are seldom slaughtered because of behavior or health concerns. Infact, 92% of the 133,000 horses slaughtered in 2008 were healthy, sound horses. 30% of these horses were racehorses that couldn't run fast enough. The other 60% were slaughtered because they were unwanted or because they were stolen from their owners by robbers that sell them to the slaughterhouses to earn a quick $200-$700. And the unwanted horses' former owner's are normally unaware of their horse being slaughtered. Here is what happens. First, the owner sells the horse to an auction to find a good HOME for the horse. This is not always the case. Undercover people called kill buyers that work for the slaughterhouse win the horses at the auction and take them to the slaughterhouse. Then, the horse is slaughtered without the former owner even knowing.   This means that only 8% of the horses were slaughtered for a good reason. Even those horses could have been humanely euthanized. The other 92% are do to overbreeding and human greed. The racing industry doesn't care about the horses one little bit. They just race them and if the suceed, the people get the money and the horse races again. But, if the horse isn't fast enough, he/she gets sold to slaughter. They just keep breeding the horses over and over again until they get a champion. The rest are slaughtered. But, can't we get passed our greed to save these horses? With your help, they could be a beautiful, happy horses with a good homes. You can help us stop horse abuse by becoming an ELC member.  Help keep the horses in the stable and off the table!!!
